Our mission is to cultivate a basketball environment that honors our children's desire for fun, competition, and skill building.

Unfortunately, most leagues and parents today are focused only on their child playing the right position, pushing them to get better, running plays, and whether the team is winning or not.

While this is a fine (and at times necessary) focus when it comes to athlete development, we believe this should not be the only focus of youth sports.

Therefore, this is not the main focus in PNW 3-on-3's basketball league.

To truly "give the game back to the kids" at PNW 3-on-3, we ask that parents and guests focus on the bigger picture of youth sports – playing for fun and building character.

We believe this contributes to a positive athletic experience for our children so they keep having fun and choose to return to basketball year after year.

NO COACHES

While a parent can assist with subbing in grades 1st-4th, we do not allow coaches in our league. Court monitors will support learning/officiating, but we want the kids to make their own decisions, self-correct and learn teamwork amongst themselves.

#1 GOAL: FOR KIDS TO PLAY

We want kids to play. Because of this, we do allow guest players to the team as needed (with a signed waiver). We will also put a team in a higher/lower age bracket if needed to remain competitive (blowouts are neither fun, nor a good learning experience).

NO YELLING

No coaching includes no parents yelling at their team or athlete on what to do or where to go. Yelling at the refs will not be tolerated. Cheering is encouraged, though!

NO PLAYOFFS / NO RANKINGS

We strive to keep the games as competitive as possible. We carefully schedule to avoid blowouts (if possible) so your athletes can learn and have fun during the season. Rankings and championships encourages way too much of a focus on winning. This can make our #1 goal and rules #2 and #3 feel impossible.

SECOND-GOAL PARENTING

during the game

Positive Coaching Alliance focuses on the Little Picture and the Big Picture in youth sports.

A Second-Goal Parent(TM) understands that while factors like positions and wins matter, the true essence lies in what their child learns from their sport experience, fostering character development for future success, and ensuring their role in these life lessons is far more significant than being a back-seat coach—because as the parent, ultimately, no one can have a greater lifelong impact on your child's growth and development than you.

rules

TM

  1. Cheer for good plays by either team.

  2. Don’t yell instructions during the game. Let the children figure it out through trial and error, or allow the court monitors to handle the learning aspect of the game rules.

  3. Mention good calls or something supportive a court monitor does to other parents.

  4. If a court monitor makes a “bad” call against your team, be silent! Yelling at the refs will not be tolerated. Remember: we are here for fun and to get better. Your athlete will have to navigate rules and calls they don't agree with throughout life.

  5. Don’t do anything in the heat of the moment that you will regret after the game. “Will this embarrass my child or the team?” is a good gut check.

  6. Have fun and enjoy the game!

AFTER the game

  1. Thank the court monitors.

  2. Encourage your team to high-five the opponent.

  3. Clean up all belongings and anything you brought into the game. Pack it in, pack it out.

  4. Win or lose — tell your athlete you're proud of them and that you loved to watch them play!
